Look within for the answers

From a young age, we are taught to look outside of ourselves for the answers.  We study for years at school and universities.  Many of us were taught to go to church and went to church weekly.  We learned to make these things outside ourselves the source, or, the answers.  The answers to our lives, all the areas of our lives, could be found from these institutions of learning, our cultural ways, and our religions.  However, making anything the source outside yourself doesn’t work.

Do you remember seeing the Wizard Of Oz, as a kid?  Kid’s perspective are magical and fresh…and open.  Can you remember that part with singing, where Dorothy is being shown The Wonderful Land of Oz?  That made me feel so happy…just giddy.

Who wouldn’t want to settle in, and live there forever, after that? I mean, the people are so nice, and the culture so happy.

But, they functioned from a supreme reliance on The Wizard; The Great & Powerful Oz  “The Wizard will know,” they say.  This kind of thinking, on a supreme diety outside themselves to guide them, event, to save them. “The Wizard Will Save Us!”  they say, without missing a blink of an eye.

Yes, it is easy to rely on sources outside to tell us how to be, react, and act.  I’d like to make a proposal.  What if the magic is inside you?  What if who you be is a gift?  What if the world is hungry for what you have to share?  I know something about us that is valuable.  In fact, it is crucial for the possibilities of a kinder, more gentler planet.

If an area of your life isn’t working for you, you are giving your power away.  You are not letting yourself hear and follow what you know.

What areas of your life aren’t working for you?

Take a look.  The first step towards change is the awareness of it.  If you really want something in your life, do you do what it takes in order to have it?

“Yeah, but this doesn’t apply to me, it doesn’t work for me” I hear you say.  When I was growing up, I was deprived of so much.

Look within for the answers

Looking within for the answers takes practice.  You may have been raised in a religion that had all the answers for you.  You may have been taught to actively discount your own knowing.  If knowing that you know and knowing what you know was discouraged, you will need to practice knowing that you already have the answers inside.

Perhaps acknowledging the impotence and unkindness of the parental units, people or organizations that taught you to distrust what you know could be a first step to reclaim your knowing.  Then begin giving kindness to yourself.  Body work, Access classes, and other healing modalities may work for you. Begin a hobby you enjoy.  Express yourself.  Make yourself and what you like important.  Make it come first in your life.  Be willing for the change to be uncomfortable.

One area that I am being kinder to myself is with money.  I have bought things I’ve never allowed myself to have before, such as a silver necklace.  I’ve overtipped people on purpose.  I know that these actions lessen the stranglehold I’ve allowed myself to function from in my life.  I acknowledged the penuriousness of those around me when I was growing up, and I choose not to function from the place anymore.

What areas of your life would you like to be the source of?  Know that you know.  The answers are within.

Just like Dorothy recalled, with a most gentle reminder, that she had the power all along, you can reclaim that power.

What do you know?  Here is a question to ask yourself every time you make a choice:  If I make this choice, what will your life be like in 5 years? If you don’t choose this, what will your life be like in 5 years?

Healthy snack ideas for busy mothers

Mothers often have to drop what they are doing to care for their young children. Meal times can often be interrupted. If you work on top of that, you need help. It is important to watch what you eat, and often times you need something quick and easy, on the go. What snacks do you grab when you are on the go that won’t leave you feeling drained? What foods will give you a good boost and stave off hunger? Please eat as organic as possible, being careful to avoid genetically modified food.

Here are some healthy snack ideas for busy mothers:

My all time favorite on the go snacks are packaged Luna bars. There are different flavors so you can find the ones you like. I like chocolate peppermint and lemon the most. I called the Clif bar company myself, and the staff said that the company sources non GMO soy and other ingredients. The vitamins are tailored for a women’s body, and there is a good ratio of protein to carbs.

Clif company also makes delicious Mojo bars and Clif bars.

String cheese (Horizon organic brand) with an apple

Celery with almond butter.

Grapes and carrot sticks.


Organic Dark Chocolate, 70% or higher. Good choices are Dagoba, Green&Blacks, and Divine Chocolate brands.

Handful of trail mix with dried fruit and various kinds of nuts.

and sunflower seeds, and other things.


Stonyfield organic yogurt, Nancy’s cultured cottage cheese, or Lifeway Kefir. These organic dairy products have a good amount of protein, are delicious, and probiotics, which protect the gut. Sprinkle chia seeds in.

Besides snacks, include water

Lastly, stay hydrated by carrying a big bottle of spring water wherever you go. Most sources of tap water in the USA are not good for you, as unfortunately the water supply is not only chlorinated but replete with prescription drug residue. I also recommend non plastic water bottles, such as a steel Kleen Kanteen brand, as able.

Yeah, you spend a little more when you choose to purchase these organic products and snacks. But isn’t your health worth it? Help grow the organic movement and invest in your healthy living and future.

Being the change to stop violence against women: what will it take?

I recently supported participation in One Billion Rising Strike – Dance – Rise on February 14, 2014, SAY NO to violence against women and girls.. One in three woman on the planet is being raped or beaten in her lifetime. That would be about one billion. In the United States, a woman is being raped every 9 seconds.

I recently learned from Donna McAleer that in 2013 the US House passed the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act with little support from the Utah delegation in a mostly partisan vote with Reps Bishop, Chaffetz and Stewart all voting against it. So 5/6 of Utah’s states delegation did not support this bill. S. 47: Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2013

Whatever any of the House representatives’ reasonings are to be for or against this violence against women bill, I don’t really care. The fact that a strong bipartisan bill went through is to be applauded. I acknowledge that progress is being made to really see and be aware of this problem at a governmental level. I have a question though. Is government programming is the answer? If yes, than I have another question: How has putting our trust implicitly with a force outside of ourselves been working for us? We’ve been lead to believe that change is outside of us. They (governments, parents, etc) will take care of it for us. Does not this framework of reference fit exactly into the mold of victim mentality?

Another question: Is having a government spending vasts sums of money on these programs really going to work? It may put a Band-Aid on the problem. In my view, we’ve covered it with band-aids long enough. This is a hemorrhage. What changes are required than, for violence against women to cease in totality?

Jeremy Meltzer: How Men Can Stop Violence Against Women

This TedEx Video was given in December 2012. Jeremy Meltzer is a man who is roaring: “Not one more sister, Not one more daughter, Not one more mother!” “Stop Violence against women!”

Is now the time for us to be the change we’ve been waiting for? One thing I know is that the invisible quantum network we are all interconnected rises to support us in choosing differently. Here’s an awareness of mine: Violence Against Women, any form of violence, can not continue to exist in the face of consciousness. What can I do to stop violence against women?

What if we exercised allowance for what is and than asked questions like “can I change this? If so, how can I change this?”

Is worrying about the neighbor ‘Sally’ or feeling sorry for the gal on the news ‘Judy’ really going to create the change required? Does buying the story and commiserating about how bad it is change anything?  Here is what most people will not say.  Allowing other people the freedom to choose to create their lives could be a gift. Could there be something you could contribute though? What energy, space, and consciousness could you be to have clarity and ease with this? How could choosing your joy, no matter how absurd it appears to others, be, to create the change required? What would it take to have a life of joy and ease? Could being in your joy be an invitation to greater possibility that inspires other people to choose differently? And if they don’t, could you honor their choice in that too? And remember, just because someone else can’t know it, doesn’t mean you can’t know it.

Something I have been asking more of to show up in my world is kindness, gentleness, and caring. How would it be to have more kindness in and as your reality? What could that be like? What choice can you make today to receive, be, know, and have kindness and gentleness in your world, more than you can even imagine, right away?

Movie Soundtracks include the most Inspiring music ever written.  I probably have more favorite movie soundtracks than any other genre.  I could listen to the Harry Potter movie soundtracks by John Williams all day. However, these lesser known gems have given me chills, made me cry, moved me to ecstasy, or all of the above.  I am delighted to share them with you.

The Mission – Gabriel’s Oboe  This song is haunting and beautiful.  It got me through some dark times.  Plus, it is a great memorial type piece that, if I die, you can play in my honor.

Millions Soundtrack – Nirvana by El Bosco  This rendition is a nice cover.  It captures the essence of the exuberance of children.  It imparts a lighthearted cheeriness.

Gladiator Soundtrack – Now We Are Free by Lisa Gerrard  Lisa channeled this piece.  She and her twin sister spoke this mysterious language to each other as children.  Can you hear the vibrations of freedom?

My 5 Day Media Fast

5 Day Media Fast

I have been listening to and applying some of the advice given in The 4 Hour Work Week by Tim Ferris.  One of the suggestions is to Go on a 5 day media fast.  I figured this would be easy, because I already choose not to listen to the tv news, read newspapers or magazines, etc.  I did realize that I had a facecrack, ahem, facebook addiction though.  As well I obsessively was checking my emails and dealing with them a lot throughout my day.  I took this challenge on as chance to loosen the obsessive grip I had developed.

I largely relied on facebook and email as an outlet while files for my data abstraction job would download to my laptop intermediately throughout the day.  Because the data abstraction working world is tedious and dull at times, it was quite interesting to see what was being shared via email and facebook.  I had been doing this regularly for about 18 months, and it had also become a habit to check email and facebook first thing in the morning and last thing before I went to bed.  I mean, really?  What about connection with my family? So 2 weeks ago when Tim Ferris gave this media fast challenge, I said, OK, let’s do this thing. I did the program as outlined excepting that I did tweak it to fit my needs.  Tim suggests no social media or email.  I knew that wasn’t best for me as I was beginning my new business ventures and I sensed it was good to remain connected at a basic level.  So my individualized targets for my media fast included:

1:  Whittle down facebook to checking for private messages or business mastermind groups updates that I belong twice a day,  at lunch time and 4pm.

2:  Whittle down checking emails to twice a day also, lunch time and 4pm.

3. Otherwise No Media as per the challenge guidelines.  No extra non-fiction books besides 4 hour work week.  No TV.  No Magazines.  No news websites. No surfing the web.  Music was allowed.

My Media Fast Experience

So what happened during my my media fast?  Number 3 was the easiest for me.  I think I only clicked on 1 or 2 media links the entire 5 days.  Numbers 1 and 2 were rough.  I took my work laptop work downstairs to my recliner, away from my desktop, so I would not be tempted to click and skim status updates or on my latest email.  I learned I had a ton of extraneous emails I never really gained anything from anyways. I unsubscibed to a ton of things I wasn’t engaged with anyways, like most of the groupon, daily deal, and coupon sites.  I checked email like 4 times the first day.  I realized that even checking took a half hour to an hour of my time.  That really adds up. I realized what a huge time suck that had been for me.   Day 1 of the media fast on I did get sucked in to facebook a couple of times.  My partner made sarcastic sucking sounds when he walked by me.  I laughed at myself, and renewed my commitment to attempt again the next day.  Beginning Day 2 of my media fast, and continuing through Day 5, I kept my word for the most part and did not check facebook.

Insights Gleaned from my Media Fast

Throughout your work day, Tim suggests asking yourself “Am I being effective, or just productive?”  How much of my life was I spending on being productive, but not necessarily effective?

1:  I don’t really have time to spend scrolling through hundreds of statuses just for the hell 
of it.  It is a real time drain that adds nothing to my life.  If it actually feels light and expansive now, I can do that.  However, the need isn’t there.  A lot of time was sucked up by clicking on external news site links that actually left me with quite a bitter ‘this world is crazy’ sense that I could do without. I actually took some pages that I liked off of my “show in newsfeed.”  I still ‘like’ them because it is a good introductory wake up call for some people to be exposed to that info. (truthout, ce evolution, vaccine information network, etc)  So I like to have my name there for other friends to see, as social proof.  However, I am well aware of what is crazy in this world and am taking steps to be the change I wish to see.  Also, with a couple facebook friends I took measures to either “only show important” updates or “don’t show updates” in my newsfeed. These are the people that are professional energy sucks that I had been overdosing on.  Also, now if I skim the newsfeed, I go really fast, and I give myself permission to use my razor sharp awareness to only stop at the status’s I am inspired to as I ask questions like, “what is possible here in order to receive and be a contribution?”

2.  Checking my email a couple of times a day is sufficient.  I still could tweak this some more. Email takes a lot of time. I am asking the question, “Will this expand my agenda?”  If not, I click “delete” immediately, without looking at it, and I don’t look back.

3.  I was glad that the other challenge stuff, like no tv news and tv watching was already something I do or was easy.  I am grateful that that drain on my time isn’t there. It works for me to be unplugged from those arenas.

4. If something important is happening that is relevant to your world, you will know. Also, people will be talking about big stuff. For example, on Super Bowl Sunday, I had no idea, and all I had to do was glance at facebook.  (shows how much I care about cultural norms) You can let go of the world for a few days.  The world does go on without you.  In a way, that knowledge frees me to be morepresent with my own life.  And I ask “what do I wish to create as my living now?” on a regular basis.

Overall: This media fast resulted in an intermediate level media detox for me.  I’ve done physical cleanses, and I perceived information clutter and junk was leaving my system. It’s amazing how much information I was using as a distraction from choosing to have my own life.  The room and space created now provides more clarity for actions to take towards fulfilling my own desires.

Even if you don’t think you have an intuitive bone in your body, you are actually highly aware.

You’ve just been told all your life that the way to do things is modular.  Square.  Check the box.  Not outside it.  Connect the dots.

All tests were A, B, C, or D.  That is not creative thinking.

Intuition lies in the creative realm, which U.S. standard public education has been stripped of, down to the bone.

Here is the definition of intuition from Webster’s 1928 dictionary:

INTUI”TION, n. [L. intuitus, intueor; in and tueor.]

A looking on; a sight or view; but restricted to mental view or perception. Particularly and appropriately, the act by which the mind perceives the agreement or disagreement of two ideas, or the truth of things, immediately, or the moment they are presented, without the intervention of other ideas, or without reasoning and deduction.

We know by intuition, that a part is less than the whole.

So, you see, sitting in a desk, listening to a passionless, system upholding teacher is counter-intuitive.  In order to erase mind-numbing programming and get in touch with your intuition, you can start with the following guidelines:

  • Listen to some music and sing at the top of your lungs.  Turn it Up LOUD.  Smile and Forget what the neighbors think for 3 minutes.  You owe it to yourself to shine like you may die tomorrow anyways.  I know, start with the potentially hardest one first.  Than the rest are a piece of cake.
  • Get up with the sunrise.  Go outside and watch and listen during this time. Or take time out during the sunset. Here is a calendar for when the sunrise and sunset occurs.
  • Go to the water.  Spend time near an ocean, river, lake, pond, or waterfall.  I especially take time to soak in a natural hot springs.  At least soak in your tub.  At Bruce Lee says, “Be Like Water.”
  • Do something active and fun with your children every day.  Go down the slide, skate indoors, jump on the trampoline, do the funky chicken dance, hang upside down on the monkey bars, and dress up and play pretend.  If you don’t have children, that’s ok.  Do this anyways.
  • De-stress.  A locked up mind and body is not conducive to sensing and perceiving.  Get a massage.  Take a deep breath.  And another one.  And another one.  If you really would like dynamic change, schedule an Access Bars session with me.  POTENT BE THAT ONE!  I wouldn’t touch that if I were you…unless you want explosive results that will have you smiling so big people will ask what drugs you’re on.  And people will think you have happiness-itis.
  • If you want to follow an intuition development program, go for it.  Collette Baron Reid of Hay House is well known.  A local intuition instructor may work as well.
  • Start to recognize whenever you are about to chose or do something if it makes you feel light or heavy.  For example, I’ve seen my daughter’s school musical once.  I could go again and see a different cast.  I could also work on developing my WordPress site and my blog.  Faced with this choice, I asked myself, “which one is lighter?”  Working on this post was lighter for me, so that is true for me.

These are all just guidelines.  You are the true authority for your life, and listen to what YOU require to be happy.  Happy Intuiting!

You may find yourself on an awakening journey, and can relate to having felt similar to Neo in the movie The Matrix. When Neo is meeting Morpheus, Morpheus tells him:  “What you know you can’t explain, but you feel it. You’ve felt it your entire life, that there’s something wrong with the world. You don’t know what it is, but it’s there, like a splinter in your mind, driving you mad…You have the look of a man who accepts what he sees because he is expecting to wake up. Ironically, that’s not far from the truth”.  Neo decides to take the red pill, making the choice to see reality for what it is. He is waking up

So waking up is a double edged sword.

You have been kissed by the lips of God and now are lead to feel the omnipresence, the omnipotence, of the Universal power Of the One True Nature. Nirvana. You may even have implemented latent psychic abilities and spiritual intuition on your path.

Let’s imagine you are in the Emperor’s New Clothes story.  Fast forward:  You now acutely see that the emperor has no clothes.  The awake individual sees the insane people all around him.  From his viewpoint, everyone is delusional.  Yes.  It began as you felt something was wrong while looking at the emperor, and the crowd behaving wildly.  You sensed something was fishy.  You climb up a tree to get a better look.  Suddenly, it becomes immediately clear the Emperor is butt naked. 

The Emperor’s New Clothes is a hoax.  And you are so stunned that you say, out loud, “Oh my God, I’ve been had!”  No one else pays much attention to the rambling person in the tree.  The masses continue celebrating how beautiful the Emperor’s robes are.  What to do?

How does this relate to our modern day world?  You see the gross injustice of modern financial systems’ (i.e. the federal reserve, corporatism) top to bottom stratosphere with it’s hoarding approach, and even stealing. You see the  blatant environmental disregard leading to severe environmental degradation that’s been inflicted by big corporations and perpetuated by the common unaware man. You’ve opened up to the knowing that there is astonishing manipulation and control by nefarious forces designed to ensnare and enslave the masses.  Why are people, at least here in the USA where I live, so obsessed with zombies?  I think they are sensing something…….They are zombies!  This asleep state has been nurtured via the mass media and advertising that uses subtle NLP / hypnotic techniques.  These hypnotic suggestions we’ve been bombarded with since we were born tell us what food to eat, what to think about (thus all the shallow focus on celebrities), and what consumer goods to crave in order to assuage the ego.

More alarming still is the assault on us and our beloved planet from every side.  GMO’s in our foods, multidinous toxic chemicals in our hygienic items, lack of free energy in housing, harmful cotton growing practices in clothing, polluted water of every source (ie groundwater via fracking, rivers via industry, oceans via plastics and ocean spills), secretive chemical spraying of our air, and injecting our bodies via vaccines and drugs with known toxins of every kind.  The average pregnant women today has 236+ different unnatural chemicals found in her umbilical cord, and in my opinion, these chemicals (not the least of which are dioxins, Phthalates, and BPA), exert a direct correlation to the increase in miscarriage and preterm delivery rates.   “The controllers” have done this covertly. (I don’t choose to spend time to go into who these beings are.  There is plenty of information out there, just google it). And, those caught in the delusion believe these products, industries, and practices are good for them.  At least the ones we are even told about.  There have been many hidden, secret agendas that are just damn scary.  That would take at least 10-20 books to even get you started researching.  These controlling forces have largely succeeded.  That is, until you woke up.

You, Waking Up

So What Now? What to do?  Do you become bitter about the Emperor and start complaining about the insanity of at all?  You could.  And if you are like me, you’ve done that plenty of times.  Do you rise up and fight?  Again, you could.  And you’d be experiencing the phrase “What you resist, persists.”  Do you comfort yourself with your creature comfort distractions? Do you move away into isolation to become a recluse?  I’ve been in isolation for years, not feeling like a part of society.  And, I have had comforting distractions to soothe me along the way, like food and movies. My feeling is these actions are ineffective.

Now, you do see that a few people around you are spontaneously waking up. You feel prompted to share your insight one on one with someone you feel like you have a connection with, who comes to YOU with questions  This can be a valuable way to influence change.  Also, you will be able to discern who else is awake.  Connect with them, and soon your numbers will grow.

You may ask, “What effective actions can I take?”  Their a several possibilities.  One is to be about your work.  For example, begin a blog.  Those people who feel drawn to you for whatever reason, may experience an internal shift from hearing your perspective and interacting with you.   As well, you may meet people who are largely disengaged from the delusion and be able to potentiate your efforts for change alongside you.  The more you are in your joy and accepting what is present for you in any given moment, the more potent your contribution to life on the planet.

This largely simplistic analogy of The Emperor’s New Clothes for the world in crises, I admit, is miniscule compared to the tasks ahead for all who are free of the delusion.  However, I am largely optimistic.  My spiritual practice has lent much hope to the present crises we find ourselves in. Three spiritual guides I have recently been following, who each carry a unique and valuable piece of the puzzle, all speak to similar themes of how we have the greatest spiritual force here on earth now, than we have ever had before.  This assistance is lending it’s aide in birthing a new reality.  All three well known spiritual guides have said that we are now and have broken free of the most sinister agendas.  This assistance is possible because of the increased amount of population awakening and subsequent works of those awakened ones.  Those who have catapulted this world into the CLEAR existence of a new reality.  Are you one of them?

So if the reality to have a world that is vibrant and alive, and where our environment and the animal kingdom are respected and honored, is here now, what will you choose?  I believe new ideas will be showing up in with incredible speed to be implemented to allow for environmental sustainability on an unprecedented and massive scale.  For example. What the internet has done for us in 15 years, free energy could do in 4 or less years. I also believe that wealth is here now for us, if you choose it.  Make the demand, and watch the universe deliver.  Do your work.  Healing the inner child is essential.  Clear your issues and self imposed blockages while you walk the road of having it,whatever it is.  There are multiple modalities that serve people, such as EFT, Access Consciousness & Access Bars, Quantum Lightweaving, Quantum Vortex Healing, H.E.A.L. Technique, and Heart Point Therapy.  Just find what feels right for you. We can and are making a difference.

Increase your happiness quotient in 2 minutes


Did you know your happiness set point is largely determined by the DNA you were born with?  But did you know you can change your DNA?  The study of Epigenetics has shown this to be the case.

Unhappiness is pandemic in our society of quick fixes and instant gratification now attitudes.  We have been trained like Pavlovian dogs to believe that what we want is outside of us.  We are bombarded constantly with messages that attempt to persuade us to believe that this product or that relationship will make me happy.  Not surprisingly, one fourth of all women in our society are on anti-depressants.   Although antidepressants have their place, in many cases, easy, safe, and effective interventions, such as these, could be a place to start.  If you do these exercises for 30 days, you will begin to see results.  Your happiness set point will increase.  Your DNA can and will change.


 Happiness, Made Easy

1.  Place your hand over your heart. Hold it there for a moment.  Feel the warmth.  Take a long breath in, and out.  On your next inhale, imagine your heart itself inhaling.  With the exhale, imagine your heart breathing out.  Continue this pattern for a minute or more.  This practice is especially good to do if you are feeling overwhelmed.  Taking a time out for just one minute has been shown to produce effective results.  This technique is given by Heart Math Institute.

2.  Think of a time where you felt joy or gratitude, like a sunset you’ve seen or a movie that made you laugh.  Think of something that softens your heart, such as a baby animal, flower, or bring to mind a peaceful song you’ve heard.  Dwell on this moment for at least 20 seconds.  Do this at least 3 times a day.  This technique was suggested by Marci Shimoff, happiness expert.

There is a difference between “look at me, I’m Kind!” kindness” and authentic, being
moved by the spirit kindness.  And when you choose the later, it grows on itself.  My mind has been popping with ways to be kind lately, and it is actually helping me receive even more joy and openness to connect with others.  Sure, it can be a stretch.  Isn’t it nice to know that kindness benefits the giver as much as the receiver?

 When the spirit says, “Move Now, buy that birthday gift for that facebook friend!”  Do it.  There may be a bigger reason than you can perceive in the moment.  Now I don’t have any grand stories to prove it to you…I do know that kindness expands on itself and will bless you 10 fold for each act you do when you are inspired, so don’t hesitate.

And isn’t it time to be kind to yourself?  Has it been a while since you can remember being kind with money to you?  Is that even a foreign concept?  Well it was for me too.  I’ve recently chosen to unplug the stopper I’d put on enjoying having the things that would elevate me.  Yeah, I probably even went overboard.  But I bought myself some things I’d been desiring but denying myself for ever, like one of the paintings I show in the video above.  I also bought several books on my wish list.  And that’s just for starters!  In what ways are you kind to you?  Thank yourself for that!  In what ways could you choose kindness for yourself?

Kindness Tip

Now, it’s actually FUN to get a hit on something you know another would receive, and then act on it, pronto.  Not because of any expectations or hopes, but just because you can.

Now I want you to ask yourself “I wonder what kindness to enrich my own and other’s lives I can show today?”  Than when something comes to mind, do it.  Let me know what happens.

There is a tribe in Africa where the birth date of a child is counted not from when they were born, nor from when they are conceived but from the day that the child was a thought in its mother’s mind. And when a woman decides that she will have a child, she goes off and sits under a tree, by herself, and she listens until she can hear the song of the child that wants to come. And after she’s heard the song of this child, she comes back to the man who will be the child’s father, and teaches it to him. And then, when they make love to physically conceive the child, some of that time they sing the song of the child, as a way to invite it.

And then, when the mother is pregnant, the mother teaches that child’s song to the midwives and the old women of the village, so that when the child is born, the old women and the people around her sing the child’s song to welcome it. And then, as the child grows up, the other villagers are taught the child’s song. If the child falls, or hurts its knee, someone picks it up and sings its song to it. Or perhaps the child does something wonderful, or goes through the rites of puberty, then as a way of honoring this person, the people of the village sing his or her song.

In the African tribe there is one other occasion upon which the villagers sing to the child. If at any time during his or her life, the person commits a crime or aberrant social act, the individual is called to the center of the village and the people in the community form a circle around them. Then they sing their song to them.

The tribe recognizes that the correction for antisocial behavior is not punishment; it is love and the remembrance of identity. When you recognize your own song, you have no desire or need to do anything that would hurt another.

And it goes this way through their life. In marriage, the songs are sung, together. And finally, when this child is lying in bed, ready to die, all the villagers know his or her song, and they sing—for the last time—the song to that person.

You may not have grown up in an African tribe that sings your song to you at crucial life transitions, but life is always reminding you when you are in tune with yourself and when you are not. When you feel good, what you are doing matches your song, and when you feel awful, it doesn’t. In the end, we shall all recognize our song and sing it well. You may feel a little warbly at the moment, but so have all the great singers. Just keep singing and you’ll find your way home.
